I was talking to Zoe yesterday and she said that people tend to ask her how I am going at school so i thought I would help her out and tell you myself. As most of you, I hope, know I am studying to be a teacher. Yes following in Dad, Mom, Granddad, and pretty much everyone else in my family's shoes, and yes 4 years left of Uni. Well after my first term of Uni I am so excited to report that I am loving it. I am a huge fan of how this course is structured and what they have chosen to teach us. I love the fact that they have thrown us right into subjects that teach us how to teach rather than trying to fill us with information. This first semester I am studying four subjects Technology of Learners, Language and Literacy in the Early years, Successful Learners (how kids learn) and History Curriculum.
Within my 4 year course we have to choose two electives and take 4 courses of each of the electives. I have chosen Literature and History. I felt as if these two kind of went hand in hand with eachother. The part of teaching that really excites me is reading and writing i love the ideas of teaching young children how to read and the joys of reading and writing. I also would love to teach the upper years as the idea of reading and writing with kids that can think critically really makes me happy.
They have already thrown me into a school after 5 weeks of instruction as an observatory kind of role. We attend a classroom for 5 fridays to observe and then have a week in school in which me and my partner teach lessons and see how it really works. Every year we have placement and they make us do it in many different settings, diverse placement (Special Ed school, school camp, country town etc.) High School, Primary School and so on.
So yeah that's pretty much my life at the moment i work on the weekends and school during the week and between the two that's all my time really. Saving up for a trip home at the end of the year with my ever lovely girl friend Ally (stalk her on facebook ;) so that should be fun. And now you know what's happening in the thrilling life of Jerry Gaiser. Ciao
